Get involved

If you like, you might be allowed to take part in research.

Why take part?

Doctors know a lot about giving medicines to children already, but they have to find out more. They have to be sure that what they are doing now is best for the children. Doctors have to work with children and their families. They also have to work with people who make medicines. Together, everyone will make sure that medicines are right for children. That is why you might like to help – nobody can do the research without children.

Who can take part?

You might be poorly and you might want to find a better medicine. You might be a brother, a sister or a friend of someone who is poorly. We always need children and their friends and families to take part in research.

How can you take part?

Children can help in many ways:

  • You might say what matters most to you.
  • You might talk about how you feel when you take part in research.
  • You might tell us what you think about things that we ask you to read.
  • You might think about how we can ask you the right questions in the right ways.
  • You might ask questions about the results of research.

Can anything go wrong? Will it make anything get better?

All sorts of things can go wrong. Things you enjoy, like eating sweets and playing games, can go wrong. Things can go wrong when you take medicines, and things can go wrong when you don’t take medicines. If you take part in research, the doctors and nurses will tell you all they can about what might go wrong. They will answer all your questions. You don’t have to take part if you don’t want to. The reason for doing research is to help poorly children get better. If you help with research, you might find that you get better, but nobody can be sure that you will get better. You might find that you try really hard to help with research but nothing gets better. Whatever happens, the doctors will share what they learn with other doctors, and that will help someone.

If you would like to know more about taking part in research, please ask your parents or other carers first. Then, if they say so, you may ask us how you can take part. We will be very pleased to hear from you.
