How we work

We help doctors and nurses

In our team, most of us are called Children’s Clinical Research Officers. We go and make friends with doctors and nurses. We want to be near the doctors and nurses. So we don’t stay in Nottingham all the time. We spend a lot of our time in Derby, Leicester, Lincoln and Sheffield. We spend time in other places, as well.

We talk to doctors and nurses about all sorts of things, like:

• How to get money to pay for medicines and other things.
• How to make sure they don’t break any rules.
• How to write down everything that they learn.
• How to let everyone know what they have found out when they have finished.

The doctors already know a lot about medicines and children. There are other things that they need to know before they are allowed to do research with children. We help them learn all that they need to know before they start their research.

You might meet one of the Children’s Clinical Research Officers when you help with research.
 

We help the people who make medicines

The people who make medicines are allowed to ask grown-ups to try new medicines. They are not allowed to ask children to try new medicines. If they want you to try new medicines, they must ask your doctor first. Then your doctor will ask you and your parents or other carers.

We help the people who make medicines.

• We help with finding the children’s doctors.
• We help with working out how many children will take part.
• We help with making sure your secrets are not shared with people who don’t need to know.
