What we do

We help researchers

We help doctors and nurses find out about medicines for children. We call this ‘research’. We call the doctors and nurses ‘researchers’. The researchers also want to learn about other things - not just medicines. They might want to know about milk for babies. There are some things we don’t help with, like cancer. The Cancer Research Network helps with cancer. When we say ‘children’ we mean everyone from babies right up to 19 years old.

Let’s think about what researchers might want to learn. Have you ever had to swallow a big pill at the same time as drinking water? Was it hard to do? Have you ever had a spoonful of nasty tasting medicine? Did you want to spit it out? Or was your medicine a nice drink, but you forgot to finish it? Did your little brother or sister try to drink it? You can help the researchers find the best sorts of medicines.

Researchers might want to learn about other things, too. You might have to go to hospital often to stop you from feeling poorly. Because you are at the hospital, you are not at school. So it is hard to keep up with all your friends in your class. Also, your parent or someone else might have to go to the hospital with you. Your brother or sister might get cross because you seem more special. You can tell the researchers what you think. They will try to find ways to help you fit in with your friends and family.

We help children and their families

  • We invite children, their parents and other carers to take part in research.
  • We use simple words to tell children what the research is all about.
  • We tell the children what they will have to do if they take part.
  • We also tell the children what they don’t have to do, if they don’t want to.
  • We make sure children and their carers can find out the results of the research.
