Why we exist
Sometimes it is hard for doctors to know what medicines to give to children Some medicines have been used from long ago by many children. We know these medicines are alright, but we need to know more about them. Sometimes when children are poorly they are allowed to have a little medicine that is really for grown-ups. You might hear your doctor say that these medicines are "off-label". Some medicines are pills or tablets. They might look like sweets but they are not sweets. You can't suck them. You are not allowed to bite them. They are too big for you to swallow whole. A doctor might make a pill or a tablet into a drink for you. You might hear your doctor say that this medicine is "unlicensed". Our job is to help doctors and factories make medicines just for children There is a new law that says what medicines doctors are allowed to give to children. First of all, some children must try using the medicines. We help the children and doctors try the medicines. Then the doctors can be sure that the medicines are alright for children. Some of the medicines are very special because very, very few children will ever need them. We help the doctors and the factories work together. The new law makes it easier for the factories to make special medicines. Would you like to know more? To learn more about this, please ask a doctor, nurse, parent, teacher or other carer. Or you may ask us. Please click here to read about what we do. |
